When Do Hummingbirds Arrive in Southern Ontario?

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, the only hummingbird species that regularly breeds in Ontario, typically begin arriving in mid to late April, with numbers increasing through May. If you’re eager to welcome them, now is the perfect time to get your backyard or cottage ready!

How to Attract Hummingbirds to Your Yard

1. Put Out Nectar Feeders Early

Timing is everything. Hummingbirds remember reliable food sources from year to year, so setting up feeders before they arrive can encourage them to stop by. Ideally, aim to have your feeders filled and ready by mid-April.

  • Best Feeder Choice: The WBU High-Perch Hummingbird Feeder provides an ideal feeding position, preventing spills and attracting more birds. Available here.

  • Smart Viewing Option: Want to enjoy hummingbird visits even when you're not home? The WBU Smart Hummingbird Feeder lets you watch these tiny marvels remotely via an app—perfect for catching every magical moment from anywhere! Find it here.

  • Recipe for Success: Make your own nectar by mixing 1 part sugar with 4 parts water. No need for red dye—hummingbirds find feeders naturally!

2. Create a Hummingbird-Friendly Habitat

Hummingbirds are drawn to vibrant, nectar-rich flowers. Adding native plants like bee balm, columbine, and cardinal flower to your garden can make your space irresistible. Backyard biodiversity goes a long way!

Pairing feeders with flowers helps provide a reliable food source all season long.

3. Provide Perches + Water Sources

Hummingbirds need a place to rest between feedings. Small branches, trellises, or even specialized WBU Hummingbird Perches give them a spot to recharge. A shallow birdbath with a mister or dripper can also entice them, they love moving water!

4. Keep Feeders Clean + Fresh

Warm weather can quickly spoil nectar, so be sure to clean your feeders every few days with a WBU Hummingbird Feeder Cleaning Brush to keep your visitors happy and healthy. Fresh nectar = more hummingbirds!
