Scary Fact #1: Fake spider webs are a threat to birds.
Songbirds are at risk of becoming entangled in the webbing which is almost always fatal. Skip the cheap & harmful decorations this year, and opt for more natural decor like carved pumpkins, corn stalks, and hay bales.
Scary Fact #2: Domestic cats kill MILLIONS of birds each year.
The #1 human-caused reason for the devastating decline in bird populations, next to habitat loss. Free-roaming cats are non-native predators introduced by humans, and have devastating effects on wildlife populations. Cats make fantastic pets, but do best indoors where they are safe from predators, cars, disease, and more. Still want to take kitty outside for some fresh air? Opt to use a leash, or build a "catio" (enclosed patio) for them to enjoy - win win for birds and cats!
Scary Fact #3: Rodenticides don’t ONLY kill rodents.
Birds of prey in particular are highly susceptible to poisoning via rodenticide used as a form of pest control. When a bird of prey consumes a rodent who has consumed poison, it is passed onto the bird. While one poisoned mouse might not result in the death of the bird (though it could), it can cause illness weakening the bird and limiting its ability to care for itself which eventually leads to death.
Scary Fact #4: Window strikes kill an estimated 100 MILLION to 1 BILLION birds each year across North America.
Fall means migration for many bird species - and a time they are most vulnerable to window collisions. Birds are attracted to reflective surfaces, especially when they mirror trees or open space. Window strikes are often fatal, but largely preventable! Help keep birds safe from window collisions by installing collision deterrents such as Feather Friendly (available at WBU in store and online).
Scary Fact #5: Dirty bird feeders and baths make birds SICK.
Many illnesses are contracted through bird-to-bird contact, or through contaminated surfaces. Because of this, it is extremely important to thoroughly clean and disinfect all feeders, birdbaths, and feeding equipment. Cleaning your feeders regularly (at least once per month) helps limit the spread of disease, bacteria, and parasites. Sanitize your bird feeding equipment regularly using a 10% bleach solution, rinse well in hot water, and allow to air dry completely before using again.
Happy Halloween - Stay Safe & Have Fun!
