Happy Birthday, John James Audubon

9:00 AM

If you haven't seen Google's homepage today you need to take a look! Google is celebrating the 226th birthday of legendary ornithologist John James Audubon. I wanted to celebrate as well with a brief tribute to this legendary painter, ornithologist and naturalist.

Google's Dootle tribute to John James Audubon's 226th birthday.

Dootle close up. Can you see the word "Google"?

One of John James Audubon's famous paintings of a Whooping Crane. Audubon developed his own method of drawing birds. He first killed them and propped them up into natural life-like positions before painting them.

One of John James Audubon's famous paintings of a Flamingo. Audubon was famous for painting birds in their natural habitats typically portraying them in motion, i.e. feeding, hunting etc.

One of John James Audubon's famous paintings of a pair of Northern Shovelers.

One of John James Audubon's famous paintings Peregrine Falcons.

The National Audubon Society (a conservation group) was not created by John James Audubon, but was named in honour of him.

Today the Audubon Society produces a number of field guides, like this one for Eastern birds of North America.

I hope you have enjoyed this small celebration of a truly great ornithologist and painter.

Happy Birthday John James Audubon!
